Jack and Annie must find four special kinds of writing for Morgan's library to help save Camelot. They already had made two of these, "Something to follow" and "Something to send". They are about to set off to find the third, "Something to learn" with research book, "Life on the Prairie"

The tree house had landed in a small grove of trees near a creek by the 1870s. Beyond the trees was a wide, open prairie and a train puffed across the prairie in the distance. The other direction far away, a line of covered wagons, called a "wagon train" or "prairie schooners", rolled through the rippling grass to the west.

They found a sign of life, namely a rusty pipe sticking out from the top of a small hill. As they ran to the hill, the wind began to blow harder and the clouds overhead grew darker.

At the hill, there was a schoolhouse, dugout carved out of hillside. The research book said many dugouts had storm cellars like basement below the ground, which was the safest place to be from Tornados, or twisters. When pioneers moved, the dugout became a schoolhouse, which had only one room and also had a storm cellar beneath it.

They came into the schoolhouse which was warm and dry. A small coal worked and several oil lamps lit the darkness. All was four. One of them was a teacher, Neely who didn't look more than sixteen or seventeen years old. A small boy, Will looked about Annie's age, and his younger sister Kate and a older boy, Jeb was tough-looking. Today was their first day of school in this dugout. The McGuffey Reader was their only reader. And Jack and Annie joined them.

Jeb didn't move over for Jack on the bench, not even an inch, and got mad to Jack as Jack was reading the book. Jack wanted to give some help to him, but Jeb turned on Jack with an angry look.

When they all had noon meal outside, Will and Kate shared food others. But Jeb was sitting by himself and didn't seem to have any lunch at all. Jack thought he'd try to be friends one more time. But, despite Jack's trying, this kid took everything he said the wrong way!

Will said to Jack, don't worry about Jeb. Because he had to work in the fields all the time, he was never been to school before, so he was embarrassed. He walked five miles to get the school, which meant that he really wanted to come. Will also walked two miles. Anne said it must be lonely living out here.

Thunder cracked in the sky, then rain started to fall. Everyone jumped up and ran back inside. It was just time for their writing lesson. When Miss Neely held her own slate board up for them all to see, which copied a poem of the book; ''Tis a lesson you should heed, Try, try again; if at first you don't succeed, Try, try again.'. The kids copied them with each a small slate and a thin piece of chalk.

Suddenly, loud thumping sounds came from overhead. At frist, kids of prairie thought "Grasshopper attack", despite it was hailstones. Because last spring, grasshoppers did attack them, they covered every inch of ground and ate everything even their clothes and bedsheets. The pioneers replanted and everyone helped everyone else last spring. Neely said that we must try to hold on to the good memories and let go of the bad ones. At the moment, Jack and Annie realized they had their special writing, "something to learn". Their mission was over!

As they started walking toward the tree house, the sky did look weird, really weird. When they got to the ladder of the tree house and looked back, twisting black cloud had dropped out of the storm clouds in the distance. It was twister which were whirling and tearing across the grass. All they had to do was climb up and leave, and they'd be safe. But others? Four of them might not know the cellar below there, because they was the first day of school the dugout.

They ran back toward the schoolhouse as fast as they could. As they reached the dugout, suddenly the door blew off its hinges and went flying through the air. In side, the room was a mess and four of them were pressed against the dirt wall.

Together, Jack and Annie pulled the rug off the floor and uncovered the cellar door. They grabbed the door and tried to open it, but the wind was blowing too hard. Suddenly, Jeb was beside them and pulled the door open. One by one went down the ladder and stayed until the twister would disappear away.

Neely said that just as they planted their fields again after the grasshopper attack, they would build their school again after the twister, like the poem "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." She loved teaching, and she thought, whatever you teach children today travels with them far into the future.

They hadn't gone far when Jack heard someone shout his name. Jeb asked how did they know about the storm cellar. Jack showed their research book. He said that if they ever came back through here, maybe he would be able to read that book of theirs. And he thanked for coming back to rescue them, and said that he reckoned they would all be good friends if Jack did.

At last, they had come back to the tree house.

Jack and Annie returned to the Frog Creek woods. They added the poem to the list from the Civil War and the letter from the Revolutionary War.

Annie said to Jack, you did just what that poem says you should do. He kept trying to make friends with Jeb, in the end, he did.

Now they had to get only one more special writing for Morgan's library. They wondered how that would help save Camelot.

We must try to hold on to the good memories, Miss Neely had said, and let go of the bad ones. The memories such as the kindness of Will and Kate, making friends with Jeb, the courage of Miss Neely, Jack thought, he would never forget.
