(영어표현) It's Safe To Say...
말해도 과언이 아니다


Have you ever said sometime, 
but you weren't really sure if it was true?
무언가 말하려는데 그게 정말 사실인지 확신할 수 없을 때가 있었니?


Sure...we all have.
In that case, you can't use this phrase!
물론... 다들 있을거야.
이 경우엔 이 문장을 쓰면 안돼!


This phrase is what we use when we are very sure of something:
이 문장은 우리가 확실한 것을 말할 때 쓰곤 하지:


It's safe to say....
과언이 아니다


It's often followed by " that ."
종종 that을 수반하기도 해.


So if your friend is always late
and you are sure that he will be late again today,
만약 네 친구가 항상늦기 때문에 오늘도 늦을 거라 확신하는 경우


you can say, " It's safe to say he'll be late."
or " It's safe to say that he'll be late."
이렇게 말할 수 있지, "늦는다고 해도 과언이 아니야"
혹은 "늦는다고 봐도 돼"


Functionally it doesn't matter if you use " that " or not.
It doesn't change the meaning either way.
기능적으로 'that'이 있느냐 없느냐는 문제가 없어.
의미는 전혀 바뀌지 않으니까.


So any time you are sure about something,
or you are basing your statement on past experience ,
언제든 확신하는 무언가가 있거나,
과거의 경험에 의거해 말하려 할 때,


you can use this phrase.
이 문장을 사용하면 돼.


We also often start this phrase with " I think... "
우리는 종종 '내 생각에는...' 이라는 문장으로 시작하지.


Like if your teacher always gives a test on Friday,
and your classmate asks you, 
"Do you think we'll have a test this Friday?"
You could simply say, " I think it's safe to say that." 
만약 선생님이 금요일마다 시험을 낸다면,
학급 친구가 너에게 "이번주 금요일에도 시험을 볼까?"
하고 물었을 때, 간단하게 "내 생각엔 그렇다고 해도 과언이 아니야" 라고 할 수 있어.






So even though you are sure, 
you can still say " I think " because we can never be 
100% sure of anything. 
심지어 확신하는 것을 말할 때에도 "내 생각에는" 이라고들 해. 왜냐면 우린 아무것도 100% 확신할 수 없으니까.


Another similar phrase you could use is " safe to assume ."
It basically means the same thing.
다른 비슷한 문장을 들어보자면 "그렇게 봐도 돼"라고 말할 수도 있디. 이건 기본적으로 같은 의미를 가지고 있어.


So for the example above, 
if your teacher always gives a test on Friday,
you can assume that he will give you one this Friday.
이에 대한 예시를 들어보자면,
만약 너의 선생님이 매주 금요일마다 시험을 준다면,
넌 이번 금요일에도 시험이 있을 거라 추정할 수 있지.


It's a safe assumption right?
그게 맞다고 봐도 좋겠지?


So you could say, 
"It's safe to assume that he will give us a test this Friday too."
Got it?
그럼 넌 이렇게 말할 수 있어,
"그가 이번 금요일에도 시험을 친다고 봐도 안전해."

"It's safe to say that the Giants will win the world series this year. 
They have a perfect record."
"올해 월드시리즈에서 자이언츠는 이길 거라 봐도 무방해.
완벽한 기록을 가지고 있거든"


"I think it's safe to say that the economy is about to recover."
"내 생각에 경제는 회복기에 이르렀다고 봐도 과언이 아니야."


A: "Should I bring my umbrella?"
B: "I saw the weather report and it's safe to say , yeah you should."
A: "우산을 가져가야 할까?"
B: "기상캐스터는 안전하다고 했지만, 가져가야 할 거야."


A: "do you think she's mad at you?"
B: "She hasn't talked to you in three years so I think it's safe to assume yes."
A: "걔가 너한테 화났다고 생각하니?"
B: "삼년 동안이나 말을 하지 않았으니 그렇다고 봐도 되지."


" It's safe to say that my students are all going to get an F 
because they didn't study at all."
"우리 학생들은 공부를 전혀 안 하니까 다들 F학점을 향해 가고 있다고 봐도 과언이 아니야"
